• Preston North End Sportmans' Dinner 2009

    15th October

  • Sadly, after 11 years in the Great Room at Deepdale, the Preston North End Former Footballers Association on the whole, felt that it was time for a change of venue. Therefore, after numerous discussions and meetings, we decided to move over to The Invincibles Lounge on the opposite side of the Deepdale stadium, for this years’ Sportsmans Dinner. With a different setting and different caterers it was with trepidation that we set foot into the lounge prior to the dinner. The room, decked out in blue and white, looked perfect, even spacious. As for the food, all the feedback (so to speak) was positive, as the new caterers, Franklin Hospitality, were out to try and impress us, and it worked. One member said that “it was like a much needed breath of fresh air”.

In the past we have invited a number of high profile sporting guests to our dinners, Mike Summerbee (ex-Manchester City & England) and Billy Boston of Wigan rugby league fame being the most recent. On this year’s invited guest list were John Connelly (ex-Burnley, Manchester United & England) and Tony Hateley (ex-Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool etc) as well as the Preston North End Chairman, Derek Shaw and Manager, Alan Irvine.

  • Compere, Mike King was ably assisted by the comedian Nicky Newsome and Dr. Kevin Jones. The doctor proved to be an excellent choice of speaker with his confident, witty and sometimes comical approach. Although the numbers were slightly down on previous years, 285, we should hopefully be back up to the 300 mark next year after this success. Out of the 60 members present some were attending their first dinner, including Simon Westwell and Eric Potts. Congratulations and a big pat on the back to all concerned. Let us try and increase the members attending the next dinner to 70 or above.
